01 The Brief

What did I work on?

Over the summer at Google, I worked on a research effort exploring how Pixel could feel more ambient and proactive. How can we design new interaction techniques to anticipate user needs rather than waiting for explicit input?

I owned the methodology end-to-end: from framing the research questions, creating a research plan, designing the prototypes used for user testing, and synthesizing findings into design guidance for teams across Google hardware.

02 Methodologies

What was my process to discover user needs for a product that doesn't exist yet?

I was given the opportunity to own the process end-to-end, from planning through execution.

I started with a literature review and preliminary prototyping, then developed a research plan to study how people responded to the concepts in the lab. I ran both qualitative and quantitative analysis on the findings, then used those insights to design a new round of prototypes.

03 Key Takeaways

At Google, I learned how to research through design.

From the study, I identified which proactive, ambient use cases resonated most with participants, then designed new prototypes and interaction techniques around them.

I distilled this into general guidance for how agentic, proactive experiences should show up across Pixel, principles the team could apply beyond this one study.

This summer gave me the space to ask big questions about where phones are headed, learning what it takes to design for experiences that don't exist yet.
